Local SEO Checklist: 17 Steps to Get Found on Google in 2026

The complete local SEO checklist for UK small businesses: Google Business Profile optimisation, reviews, citations, on-page fixes and content — 17 practical steps to rank in your area.

Local SEO is how your business gets found when nearby customers search on Google — and the fastest wins come from three things: a fully optimised Google Business Profile, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and a dedicated page on your website for every service you offer. Do those consistently and most UK small businesses see movement within weeks, with competitive map-pack rankings building over three to six months. The complete 17-step checklist below covers everything we run for clients, in the order that moves the needle fastest.

Part 1: Google Business Profile (the biggest lever)

  1. Claim and verify your profile. Search your business name; if the panel isn't managed by you, claim it at google.com/business. Unclaimed profiles rank poorly and can be edited by anyone.
  2. Complete every field. Category (primary + secondary), services with descriptions, opening hours, service areas, attributes, booking links. Profiles with complete information convert far more searchers into contacts.
  3. Choose the right primary category. "Emergency plumber" and "Plumber" rank for different searches. Pick the category matching your most valuable work, not the most general one.
  4. Add real photos monthly. Your team, premises, and work. Fresh photos signal an active business to Google and to customers.
  5. Post weekly. Offers, recent projects, seasonal reminders. Posts keep the profile active and give searchers a reason to choose you.

Part 2: Reviews (your ranking and your reputation)

  1. Build a review-request habit. Ask every happy customer at the moment of delight — job completed, treatment finished, meal enjoyed. A text with a direct review link converts best.
  2. Respond to every review. Positive and negative, within a few days. Responses signal engagement to Google and show prospective customers how you treat people.
  3. Never buy or fake reviews. Beyond being against Google's rules, fake reviews breach UK consumer protection law. Steady, genuine reviews beat suspicious bursts every time.

Benchmark: check your top three local competitors' review counts and ratings. Matching their count at a higher rating is a realistic six-month goal that measurably shifts rankings and clicks.

Part 3: Citations and consistency

  1. Fix your NAP everywhere. Your Name, Address and Phone number must be identical across your website, Google, Bing Places, Yell, Thomson Local, FreeIndex, Facebook and industry directories. Inconsistencies erode Google's confidence in your data.
  2. Get listed in industry directories. Checkatrade for trades, Dentaly for dentists, SquareMeal for restaurants — category-relevant citations carry extra weight.
  3. Match your website footer to your profile. Display the same NAP on every page of your site, ideally marked up with LocalBusiness schema.

Part 4: Your website's local signals

  1. Create a page per service. One page listing everything you do ranks for nothing. "Boiler installation Birmingham" needs its own page, with genuine detail — process, pricing guidance, photos, FAQs.
  2. Create location pages if you serve multiple areas. Each should contain genuinely local content: areas covered, local projects, directions — not the same text with the town name swapped.
  3. Add LocalBusiness schema markup. Structured data telling Google your address, hours, phone and service area. Invisible to visitors, valuable to rankings.
  4. Pass Core Web Vitals on mobile. Test at pagespeed.web.dev. Slow mobile sites lose rankings and, worse, lose the customers who do arrive.

Part 5: Content that compounds

  1. Answer real local questions. One post a month targeting what customers ask: "How much does a wedding cake cost in Manchester?", "Do I need planning permission for a garden room?". These long-tail articles pull in buyers competitors ignore.
  2. Track what matters. Set up Google Search Console and watch your queries, map views and — most importantly — calls and enquiries. Local SEO succeeds when the phone rings, not when a vanity keyword moves.

How long does local SEO take?

Profile and citation fixes often move rankings within weeks. Competitive map-pack positions and organic rankings typically build over three to six months as reviews, content and consistency compound. The businesses that win aren't doing anything secret — they're doing this checklist relentlessly while competitors do it once and stop.
